The Baptist denomination is one of the largest sectors of Christianity in the world and is the second largest within the United States. Because it is so large, it is also a quite diverse denomination with different requirements for ordination within different churches. Because churches are mainly independent of one another, an ordination in one is most likely invalid in another.
Requirements for Baptist Ordination
Historically, Baptists sought out ministers of lower educational levels that met the basic requirements to become a pastor. Qualities such as an understanding and love for the Gospel and the teachings of Jesus, combined with compliance to the tenants of the Baptist tradition were the only real requirements.
Although requirements vary from church to church, most have a two-step process for ordination. The first step is a license to perform Gospel ministry followed by ordination. Some churches require a convincing conversion experience from the candidate, while other churches vote to approve or reject the pastor in question.
Recommended Processes for Baptist Ordination
It is important to get in touch with the church where you wish to get ordained to get the details on what they require for pastors to get ordained. It is often recommended to take courses in Christian theology, Early Christian History and the Reformation. Classes on pastoral care, preaching and leadership are also highly recommended.
Online Ordination for Baptists
If you wish to start your own Baptist Church but can’t find a church that will ordain you, consider getting ordained with American Marriage Ministries. AMM is an online church that will ordain you for free. There are only three tenants you need to agree with to become a recognized priest within AMM. They are the following:
1. All people regardless of race, sex, or gender have the right to marry.
2. It is the right of every couple who will solemnize their marriage
3. All people have the right to solemnize marriage
AMM focuses on ordaining people so they can perform marriage, but it’s not limited to that. If you choose to become an ordained minister through AMM, you will also have the authority to perform every type of religious ritual from baptisms to funerals. Although AMM is not a baptist organization, you can get ordained with them as a baptist minister.
The main thing is that you do your research to find out which organization best fits your beliefs and supports your path as a minister. Baptist ordination is the first step to a long life of service.
