So, your friends have sent out a wedding invitation and asked that you wear “semi-formal wedding attire.” You might be asking yourself ‘what the heck does that mean?’
The definition of ‘semi-formal’ can mean a lot of different things to different people. Generally, couples want to spare you the cost of renting an expensive tuxedo or buying a brand new dress so they’ll sometimes be a little more vague in the wedding invitation.
Have no fear. In this article we’ll walk you through some of the outfit choices that define “semi-formal” and give you tips on choosing the perfect wedding outfit.
What is Semi-Formal Wedding Attire For Men?
A dress suit with matching jacket and pants is usually a great choice for men. If the couple doesn’t specify which colors to wear in the dress code, your choice will depend on a number of factors. If it’s an outdoor summer wedding, then light blue, beige or white are great options. If it’s an indoor wedding or evening wedding, then darker shades of blue or purple are also good choices. Ties are generally a personal choice, but they can definitely help sharpen and complete your look.
Just make sure you don’t wear jeans or khakis. Just because it’s ‘semi-formal’ does not mean it’s a casual event.
What is Semi-Formal Wedding Attire for Women?
Are you not into the long dress look? This is your chance to flaunt a classy romper, sleek jumpsuit, or a tasteful skirt. Opting for a two-piece suit can also be a great choice, especially if you expect the wedding will be a little more on the formal side of ‘semi formal.’
If you do choose to wear a full length dress, try to avoid wearing one with a lot of extra lace or beadwork, as this could be a little too fancy for ‘semi-formal.’
Jewelry that compliments your outfit is a great way to embellish your style while following the dress code. Gold hoops and a slim necklace are preferable to something large and overimposing.
What Shoes Should I Wear to a Semi-Formal Wedding?
Loafers or oxfords are a great choice for men, and you really can’t go wrong with a nice matching pair of leather dress shoes. Sneakers are probably the wrong decision here unless you’re trying to be a little edgy and different. (Honestly, a fun pair of socks is probably a better way of expressing your individuality than sneakers.)
For women, classy wedges or heeled boots are great options, although high heels or pumps are typically more acceptable. If the climate allows, a nice pair of sandals can also be a great option.
What’s the Difference Between Semi-Formal and Cocktail Attire for Weddings?
Generally, semi-formal wedding attire is just a step down from cocktail attire and just a notch up from business attire.
Cocktail dress code calls for tuxedos, lots of fancy jewelry, expensive watches and statement pieces, and long gowns. While patterned dresses work as a semi-formal look, cocktail attire calls for a solid, bold, sharper look.
Sometimes the only thing you need to step up an outfit from business look to wedding look is an extra piece of jewelry or a little flower pinned to your suit. Often the most tasteful approach is one that is simple, thoughtful, and well put together.
