How to Choose the Perfect First Dance Song

The first dance is one of the most beautiful parts of the ceremony but choosing the perfect first dance song can be one of the most challenging parts of planning the wedding. The couple has just expressed their love for each other and vowed to remain faithful until the end of their days. They then take the dance floor to express their love in the form of dance in front of their beloved family and friends.

It’s a surreal moment and one of the most romantic of the entire ceremony. It’s important, therefore, that the right song is chosen for the first dance. It should be one that reflects the style of the wedding, while at the same time bringing out the unique character of the couple through dance. In this article we’ll talk about all the things you should consider when choosing what your first dance should be.

What Is Your Love Story?

How you got to know each other, and in what kind of circumstances you became close is something you might want to express in your first dance. Is your wedding the culmination of a whirlwind romance, or has it been a fifteen year relationship? Think about what music you have in common. Was there a particular band that you bonded over? If so, maybe they have a song that would work for your first dance.

Maybe there was a song that defined your relationship. A song that brought you closer together, or one that was playing when you had your first kiss. If it’s something that would work as a dance as well, then go for it! This could add a whole new personal dimension to the moment, and help you feel the love burn even stronger as you embrace on the dance floor.

What is the Mood and Style of the Wedding

It is important that the first dance fits with the vibe of the entire wedding ceremony. A casual wedding will allow for you to be quite liberal with your choice. It could even be a hip-hop song or a catchy pop melody. Just consider your audience and choose something that won’t be too jarring, but fits into the rest of the vibe.

What is the Danceability of the Song?

Obviously you want to make sure that the song is something you can dance to. Also choose a song that you feel comfortable dancing to. Is it a song that you feel confident to dance to? Maybe a slow, romantic ballad is a little easier than a complex hip-hop rhythm.

Get Inspired by Popular Choices

Even though it’s important to choose a song that is personal to you, it’s also helpful to look at popular first dance songs for inspiration. Here are a few classic and modern choices:

Classic love songs include “Can’t Help Falling in Love” by Elvis Presley, “Your Song” by Elton John or  “At Last” by Etta James. If you want something a little more contemporary, but nonetheless slow and danceable, consider a modern love song like “Thinking Out Loud” by Ed Sheeran, “All of Me” by John Legend, or “Marry Me” by Train.

Some examples of upbeat popular songs include “Crazy in Love” by Beyoncé, “Can’t Stop the Feeling!” by Justin Timberlake and “Celebration” by Kool & the Gang.

Practice The Dance

Once you’ve picked out the song, the next step is to practice it a few times. Make sure you are comfortable with the choice. Sometimes you’ll only know if it works once you’ve tried dancing to it. Get creative and personalize your moves however you like. There’s no right or wrong as long as the song brings you into your element. Go on, rock your body!
